Howie’s on La Crosse
A college favorite, this sports bar and restaurant is a popular hangout for both students and locals. Their menu features classic American food like burgers, sandwiches, wraps, wings, and pizza. They also have a full bar, delicious signature drinks, and a Sunday Bloody Bar.
Recommendations: Start off with an appetizer of pepper-jack cheese bites and a La Crosse Street Lemonade.
Also, if you are in the downtown area and looking for a similar menu, the owner’s of Howie’s also run a Gastropub and Bourbon Bar on Third Street called The Crow.
Buzzard Billy’s, located on Pearl Street, features Cajun cuisine and American entrees. While their specialty focuses on New Orleans style classics, they also have a wide variety of American food available, many featuring a spicy kick (or the option to go without).
Recommendations: I’m a big fan of their burgers as well as their blackened chicken salad. I’ve also heard great things about the gumbo and the pasta.
If you’re headed there on the weekend, be prepared to wait for a table. I don’t think I’ve ever been there on a Friday or Saturday without a wait time. The good news is, customers are welcome to wait for their table upstairs in the Starlite Lounge while they enjoy one of their signature martinis! There are appetizers and food available here too if you’re feeling especially hangry:)
Dublin Square offers Irish beers and entrees, as well as classic pub food. Friendly staff and great service! They are also one of the few places downtown with outdoor patio seating.
Recommendations: My favorites here include the veggie wrap and the Reuben rolls appetizer. Their burgers are good too…and their mac and cheese…I’m pretty happy with anything I’ve had put in front of me there.
If you know me, you now I’m obsessed with pizza, pizza! In my opinion, Big Al’s has the best pizza in La Crosse. There are plenty of specialty pizza options to choose from, along with a build your own option. Their menu also offer calzones, pasta, sandwiches, and burgers, and they are one of the few restaurants downtown that will take reservations.
Recommendations: Any pizza. With Ranch for dipping. Pizza, pizza!
Those are my top recommendations for your basic dinner out! If you’re looking to splurge a little more or impress a date, there’s also plenty of options in the downtown area:
- 4 Sisters Wine Bar and Tapas Restaurant (Reasonable tapas, expensive entrees)
- The Freight House (Fine dining, fancy. $3 Burger special on Tuesdays)
- Kate’s On State (Probably the best pasta I’ve ever had)
- The Charmant Hotel (Rooftop bar open for summer!)
- The Waterfront (Can’t beat the beautiful backdrop of the Mississippi)
